01What a Japa maid is
A Japa maid, also called a Japa nanny, Japa bai or Japa lady, cares for a new mother and her baby at home in the first weeks after delivery. The word comes from the traditional postnatal period, when the mother is meant to rest while someone experienced looks after her and the baby.
She usually stays day and night, because a newborn needs feeding and settling around the clock and the mother needs to sleep.
02What she does, day and night
- Taking care of the newborn
- Feeding, bathing, changing and calming the baby
- Helping the mother safely during her bath
- Tying the stomach cloth (belly wrap) after delivery
- Getting warm water ready for the mother
- Keeping the mother’s and baby’s room clean
Small extra help, if you agree it: washing clothes for the mother and baby.
03What she does not do
- Cooking for the rest of the family
- Sweeping, mopping or cleaning the house
- Medical or nursing care
A Japa maid is not a nurse. If the mother or baby needs medical care after delivery, such as wound care, injections or monitoring, that needs a qualified nurse and your doctor’s advice.
04Japa maid salary in Bangalore
With ApnoKeCare, a Japa caregiver’s salary is ₹28,000–₹35,000 a month, depending on experience, paid straight to her.
On top of the salary there is our plan fee plus GST. Plans run for 1 month, 2 months and 3 months. The full first-month total is worked out in the nanny salary and cost guide.
05When to book
Start a few weeks before the due date. That leaves time to meet caregivers, check references and agree the start date, which can then move with the actual delivery date.
Tell us early if you expect twins, a caesarean or a long hospital stay, so we match someone with that experience.
06Questions to ask before you choose
- How many newborns have you cared for, and can I call one of those families?
- How do you bathe a newborn and care for the umbilical cord area?
- How do you help with breastfeeding and burping, and when do you suggest calling the doctor?
- What do you need for your own rest and sleep?
- Have you cared for twins, or after a caesarean, if that applies to you?
07What she needs from your family
- 8 hours of proper sleep every day
- Healthy food, three meals a day
- A clean and safe place to sleep
- Emergency contact numbers
- Clear house rules
- Respectful behaviour and salary paid on time
